When Pigs Cry (New Release)
About This Preview
This preview is structured to clearly demonstrate how the source material in When Pigs Cry behaves for creature design.
The opening sound is a designed creature created using only pig recordings from the When Pigs Cry library.
Immediately following, you’ll hear a series of short excerpts from the raw pig recordings listed below, used to build that creature, in order of appearance.
Source files featured in this designed creature example:

After that, you’ll hear a series of excerpts from the library played at their original speed, followed by the same material slowed down, to demonstrate both the inherent variety in the source recordings and how much creature design potential is present, with pitch alone providing substantial usable transformation.
All source recordings in this preview are unaltered dual mono files.
The left channel is the Sanken CSS-5, and the right channel is the Sanken CO-100K.
The increased clarity and detail in the right channel is due to the extended high-frequency information captured by the CO-100K microphone that survives extreme pitch bending (60–85%).
The intent here isn’t to be exhaustive, but to give a clear sense of how much usable creature material exists in the raw recordings themselves.
When Pigs Cry is a focused collection of pig vocalizations recorded on a working farm in Wolfe City, Texas during routine veterinary care. The material captures authentic vocal responses and social interaction across a wide range of pig sizes, from young pigs to a full-grown sow (approximately 100–500 lbs).
The library was originally recorded for creature design on a separate project and curated here as raw, high-quality source material for sound designers. The performances feature naturally evolving pitch, rhythm, texture, and intensity that remain usable under aggressive processing, pitching, and transformation. Together, these recordings provide a broad palette of vocal behaviors that translate effectively into creature vocals, explosion sweeteners, and magic elements.
What’s in the Recordings
The collection is organized around clearly defined vocalizations to streamline creature design workflows.
- Baby pig squeals and screeches with wide pitch swings, irregular rhythm, and escalating intensity
- Rapid chitters and chatter vocals featuring syncopated patterns and tight, percussive articulation
- Distressed grunts with shifting tone, uneven pacing, and dense mid-range texture, offering rich harmonic and frequency content that holds up under heavy processing and pitching for creature cries, low-mid gurgles, and growls.
- Baby and large sow interactions capturing natural call-and-response timing between size-contrasting voices, with interaction-driven pitch, timing, and textural variations not present in the solo recordings of either.
- Large sow grunts with dense low-end weight, breath, and uneven pacing
- Group feeding and scuffle vocals including growls, forced breathing, bark-like bursts, hiss-like textures, and intermittent lip smacks
- Mid-sized pig vocals features an exceptionally wide range of squeals, chitters, grunts, barks, chirps, and occasional horse-whinny-like calls, with rapid shifts in pitch, density, and texture that create highly varied, non-repeating source material.
-
High-pitched runt vocals containing the highest-frequency content in the library, with unusually varied vocal behaviors and rapid shifts in articulation that make the material especially effective for pitching and transformation into a wide range of creature voices.
